More Melrose

Melrose was founded (endowed also by David I) in 1136 by the Cistercian order of monks, and the last monk died in 1590. The Abbey was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Alexander II (d.1249) and Robert the Bruce’s heart (d. 1329), were buried here. St. Cuthbert, abbot of  Lindisfarne, began his monastic career here. The present Abbey church was constructed after Richard II’s army raid in 1385.
