would have been open space with gardens, medicinal and food plants. Cloister not intact, might have looked like one at Abbey in Iona, which has been rebuilt.

The chapter house ruins

include graves of members of the community., most probably abbots. The remains were exhumed and re-buried here.

The north transept

became a burial place for the Ker family, ancestors of the present owners, the marquises of Lothian. This tomb was particularly evocative.
