The nave

The first photo taken from ground floor, the others from above, with winding staircase as last photo, and previous photo of building stone in ceiling of staircase with Latin inscription, from a Roman altar here used as a lintel, with inscription reading “to Jupiter, best and greatest…”. Another Roman stone was re-used as paving stone in Abbey. They may have come from the Roman fort at Cappuck, 4 miles east.
