This is Scotland’s largest inhabited castle, still in the Duke of Roxhurghe family, with 10th Duke and family in residence.
Sheila from Fauhope House said we had to go there, and we couldn’t find it the first day, came back on Tuesday and still had a hard time finding our way around – parked at the wrong end, then went back for the car only to discover that Mickey had the keys, met up again and then had to go around town to re-enter and pick him up. I’m sure it was a lovely castle but that’s the most memorable thing about it – nightmare to find our way around! I think it’s a huge estate, with high stone walls all around.
Now I remember another very interesting thing – a video of current operations on the estate, wind farms, stud and race horses, cattle, sheep, farming barley and oats used in whiskey-making, rentals and tenant farmers on 52,000 acres. Quite an operation keeping up a castle these days!
