The original, circa 800, is at Trinity College, Dublin. It is now thought that the book was written and illustrated on Iona, then moved to the monastery at Kells, Ireland in 807 CE for safe-keeping when Viking raids made safety of persons as well as sacred possessions more precarious on Iona. Many monks moved to Kells, but some remained on Iona.
